Surf Lessons and Surf Tours from Surfing Life

The surf season is back on the south coast, and with it the most common question we get at breakfast: “Where should I surf today?” Whether you’re brand new or have been surfing for years, we can help you get the most out of your time here.

Surf lessons

We arrange lessons with experienced local instructors at Weligama Bay, the south coast’s best beginner wave, about 3 km from the guest house.

A typical lesson includes:

• A beach briefing on safety, currents and how waves work.
• Pop-up practice on the sand.
• Time in the water with your instructor, who’ll push you into waves and give feedback after each one.
• A soft-top board and rash vest, so you don’t need to bring anything.

Most beginners are standing up by the end of their first lesson. After three or four, many are ready to rent a board and practise alone. Our first surf week plan shows how to put it all together.

Improving surfers can book coaching too. It’s the fastest way to fix your paddling, wave selection and first turns.

Surf tours

For intermediate and advanced surfers, a surf tour with someone who knows the coast is the best way to find the right wave each day. The coast between Weligama and Galle is packed with reef and point breaks. Which one works depends on swell, wind and tide.

On a tour, a local guide will:

• Read the conditions and choose the best breaks for your level.
• Handle transport, boards included.
• Show you the entry and exit points, the channel and the hazards at each spot.
• Help with line-up etiquette, so you can surf without stepping on toes.

Other trips

We can also help organise:

• Whale watching from Mirissa during the season.
• Day trips to Galle Fort.
• Drivers and transfers to and from the airport.
