Best Time to Visit Weligama: A Month-by-Month Guide
3 min read
Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit different coasts at different times. That means there’s always a good beach somewhere on the island. For Weligama and the south coast, the timing of your trip makes a big difference to the weather, the surf and the crowds.
The short answer
- Best overall: December to March. Dry, sunny weather, clean surf, calm swimming conditions and whale-watching season.
- Shoulder season: November and April. Mostly good weather with fewer visitors. Expect the odd afternoon storm.
- Off-season: May to October. The southwest monsoon brings more rain, wind and rougher seas. It’s quieter and often better value, and plenty of days are still sunny.
Month by month
November
The season starts. Rain gets less frequent through the month, the sea settles and surf schools get busy again. It’s a good time to arrive before peak prices and crowds.
December to February
Peak season. You can expect long sunny days, warm sea temperatures and consistent, clean waves in Weligama Bay. It’s ideal for learning to surf. Whale-watching boats run from nearby Mirissa. The Christmas and New Year weeks are the busiest of the year, so book early for those dates.
March
Still dry and hot, with good surf and fewer people than in January. Many regulars think March is the sweet spot.
April
Heat and humidity build before the monsoon, and afternoon showers become more common. April also brings the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April, a lovely time to experience local traditions.
May to September
The southwest monsoon arrives. Expect bursts of heavy rain, strong onshore winds and larger, choppier surf. Beginners will find fewer clean days, though more experienced surfers can still find waves. Accommodation is quieter and often better value. It’s also a good time to combine the south with the cultural triangle or the east coast, which are in season then.
October
The inter-monsoon period. It can be unsettled, with rain and thunderstorms, but conditions improve towards the end of the month as the south coast season approaches.
Weather at a glance
| Period | Weather | Surf for beginners | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec – Mar | Dry, sunny, hot | Excellent | High |
| Nov & Apr | Mostly dry, some storms | Good | Medium |
| May – Oct | Wetter, windy | Fewer good days | Low |
Temperatures stay warm all year, typically in the high 20s to low 30s °C, and the sea is warm enough to swim year-round. Always check local flags and ask about conditions before swimming in rough seas.
